It's been too long since my last blog post, and to be honest, a lot has happened. My twins had their first birthday, a summer holiday came and went, and a new school year began. This year I hope to write a couple times a week, if I'm not learning enough to meet that commitment then I think something is wrong! So, how has the new school year started? Well, first of all I have a new item to add to my portfolio; school librarian! That's right, as well as being the vice-principal at my school, I am also the new teacher-librarian. This is going to provide me with many new opportunities to work with teachers in the area of reading and writing, so I'm very excited about that. On the flip side, I have never served in this role before, so I'm finding the learning curve is quite steep.
This year I am focusing my leadership on a couple areas, the first being modeling my core value: every member of the school, from the K student to the caretaker and everyone in between, needs to know they are a valued. I truly believe there needs to be genuine relationships in place before risk taking and growth can occur. If I do not extend myself to them and let them know I care and believe in them how will they know? So that's my first goal, to continually and intentionally let everyone know they are important members of our "organization". The second goal is one I'm hoping will grow from my first: all students will be engaged in school and find relevance in what they do. If I am able to build meaningful relationships with the staff and students I am hoping they will be comfortable enough to share what it is that is relevant to them.
Will it be easy? No, but nothing worth doing ever is. I will continue to post celebrations and struggles as my learning journey continues this year.
